GTA movie was "never" planned
GTA movie was "never" planned
No doubt you've heard the many rumors and possibly read the many articles posted around the web over the past day on an apparently planned Grand Theft Auto movie staring Eminem. We held off posting anything until we received something concrete from Rockstar on what exactly this was all about, today they responded to the rumor that said the project was a "done deal" stating
"Some movie producers were trying to put something together to entice us to make a movie, as studios and production teams frequently have done in the past. We never entertained proceeding with the project... Rockstar was not involved in this project in any way, shape or form... It [a Grand Theft Auto movie] is not something we are currently interested in."
They also argued that the script (and most probably the entire project) -- "was no more interesting that the others we receive." We certainly can't blame Rockstar for this decision, most game to movie adaptations turn out far worse for the series than one off-the-mark game release. Unless you can be sure the movie plays true to the game entirely, it's a risk not worth taking. Grand Theft Auto has always been about an open-area gameplay style, a movie could not hold the same feeling as the games do at this point.
Another way to look at this if you are disappointed slightly, Rockstar has recently given the okay to a Max Payne movie that will be 2 years in the making. So they have high standards, they respect their games, and want to ensure fans are impressed, not disappointed.
