Sex Worker Advocate says GTA Violence is "Normalizing"
Tuesday was the fifth annual International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers', and Anastasia Kuzyk, a Sex Worker, pointed her finger at Grand Theft Auto saying "Sex work is a job, and violence isn't in the job description" and that violence against Sex Workers' is normalized and illegitimated due to pop culture, singling out Grand Theft Auto:
There's a video game out there where you can run down prostitutes and kill them and beat them up and take their money. It feeds into the whole subculture of allowing the violence to continue. Violence against sex workers should not be normalized, but it is.
No Grand Theft Auto has been patronized for this in the past, but to single them out as the main cause? Seems a little over the top to us. After all, there are many other people and objects in game that you can beat up, or smash, for cash! Please, give us some actual facts. The True Crime series for example had actual rape, the player didn't have control over this, however is this not still demoralizing to Sex Workers? The Grand Theft Auto series also allow you to beat down on Police Officers, could this mean beating down on a Police Office on the streets will soon be acceptable? Some how - I think not...
Thanks Kotaku.
