As most know, the classic Grand Theft Auto's, GTA1 and GTA2, have been available free of charge from Rockstar Game's classics website for several years now. However these downloads like many of Rockstar's games have been exclusive to Windows, being the computer platform best set up for gaming. Fear not Linus users, using some basic applications that have been available for Windows to Linux cross-use, most well known is WINE. Using WINE and a few small tricks mixed with a terrific technique you can have Grand Theft Auto 2 (and thus Grand Theft Auto 1 also) up and running your Linux! Revive your Inner Carjacker.

Rockstar Games has been kind enough to release some of their classics for free download– including Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2. All you need to do is supply some basic information, and download away. Here’s a quick howto on how to get GTA2 running under WINE. So get ready to blow up some hummers and hos!

The first thing you’ll want to do is install WINE. On Ubuntu, Debian, or PCLinuxOS, this is as easy as sudo apt-get install wine. On other distros, you’ll want to use your supplied package manager, or visit the home page to install from source or contributed package.
