Grand Theft Auto V Trailer 1 Analysis

Published at 11:27 AM PST

It’s here! The moment we have been waiting for since the release of Grand Theft Auto IV, the first ever look at Grand Theft Auto V. If you have yet to see the trailer, you can watch it above.

The trailer opens up. We hear the voice of an American male who maybe our protagonist. He starts to talk about why he moved to the city. He wants to retire from his line of work. What line of work he's in is unknown. He mentions that he bought a big place; this is an indication that he has money. The game is set in the modern day.

First off, we see a beach at sunset, and it's even more mind-blowing than expected. Crepuscular rays, which first made an appearnce in Red Dead Redemption, finally come to GTA. You can see a couple walking their DOG. That’s right a Dog. This is a first for the GTA series to contain animals outside of birds, sharks, and other such animals. You can also see a seagull sweep by, this isn’t a first as you collected them in GTAIV, although they never flew. Why have they been included now? Nobody knows at this point, but Rockstar did release Red Dead Redemption which contained animals, so that could have something to do with it.

There is also a surfboard leaning against a lifeguard station. Perhaps it is usable. The American flag also flutters above the lifeguard station, giving us sure confirmation that it is set in America.

Two men run along a boardwalk while two women check them out, that is nothing of real importance, but it does show how AIs react to each other. The African-American runner is wearing a t-shirt that reads ‘Pump & Run Gymnasium’.

Notice the sign on the right, ‘Pleasure Pier’. This looks similar to the one on Santa Maria Beach in San Andreas. So if Rockstar is keeping some of the place names then this could be Santa Maria Beach.  In addition, notice The Bean Machine logo makes an appearance on the coffee cup lying on the ground.

This may be for decoration only, but if you look at the blue sign it reads ‘No Fishing Zone’, maybe you can fish?

Nothing very important, but just look at how beautiful it is. There is a helicopter in distance; this confirms they make a return.

A golf course, maybe the golfing mini-game makes a return? Notice the sign reads ‘169 yards’, Rockstar is never above a 69 joke.  A zeppelin floats in the distance, perhaps you can fly it? The golf caddy makes a return.

Jet skis make a return from Vice City Stories.  Written across it is ‘Speedophile’, a play on the words pedophile.

Whoa, look at the size of that mountain. Is that Mt. Chiliad? There seem to be a few in the game.  Let us hope you can climb it.

As the convertible pulls up its roof folds in. This could be another feature? Also, notice that Pißwasser makes a return on the poster that is torn. The next shot shows the return of E-cola.

Look at that terrain. This is the first GTA to have windmills in. You can see multiple mountains in the distance. A 4x4 speeds down on the road, just look at the dust trail it leaves behind.

Some new places named Los Puerta, Downtown, and Little Seoul. Notice the license plate is a unique number, unlike IV where all the plates just said ‘Liberty City’.

An outdoor gymnasium, which similar to the one on Santa Maria Beach in SA.

The sign gives us a confirmation that this is Los Santos. So if all we saw was Los Santos in the trailer, then just imagine the rest of the state.

Another one of Rockstar’s jokes, ‘STD Contractors’.  Classic.  ‘Mile High Club’ is a reference to people who have sex on airplanes during flight.

Who is this person? Maybe he gives you some missions or perhaps is the protagonist?

Look at the crop duster as it swoops down. The detail is amazing. The AIs react to the dust, and the leaves blow away.

This is where it starts getting interesting. The man above is holding what seems to be a silenced AK. Is one of these men the protagonist? Who knows? Why are they robbing a bank?

24/7 makes a comeback, let us just hope we can enter it. The man in the car seems to be the same one tapping the van. Protagonist or just coincidence? The car's license plate says "San Andreas" instead of saying "Los Santos" like they did in GTA San Andreas when a car spawned in Los Santos.

The sign actually reacts to the mallet. Burger Shot makes a comeback, look at the bag on the bin. Also notice the bicycle leaning on the house. The house is foreclosed, does this mean you will be able to buy it? or just there for detail?

The infamous prostitutes make a comeback. Can we hire them?

This car is whizzing past to fast to tell, but it sure looks like the man we saw earlier.

A homeless man holds a sign. An articulated truck goes past; maybe we can hook up the trailer?

Holy Mother of God was that Iron Man? No, it looks more like a Hydra. The question is can we pilot it?

A club called Enema. Stay Classy. Motorbikes make a return.

Nodding donkeys (pumpjack) make a return from SA, although they weren’t in Los Santos.

‘Obey & Survive’ seems to be the motto of the LSPD. If you look at the police logo, you can see bigfoot, a reference to San Andreas myth?

The police seem to be chasing this man for a reason, is he important to the story? Maybe he is a mission giver.  Notice the shoes hanging from the telephone wires.

The Vinewood sign just looks fantastic. A jet flies over. I hope that we can pilot it.
