The second trailer for Midnight Club: Los Angeles was very short, however in just over a minute it gave away some major hints at game play to expect as well as a look at whats new, whats been beefed up and what has been overhauled. Most of which may not have been noticeable. If you're like me, you watched the trailer several times to pick up on a few of these, if not well we've got you covered.

We have scooped through each frame of the video to find all these little hints and placements so we can get a better understanding of why this is going to be Rockstar's most ambitious project yet.

Real-life, licensed vehicles

Like it's predecessor, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition; Midnight Club: Los Angeles will feature licensed vehicles from the real world. From the trailer, we see examples of the

  • Saleen 2008 S302E   (Game | Real)
  • Kawasaki 2007 Ninja ZX-14 (motorbike)   (Game | Real)
  • Chevrolet Impala LS (Cop Car)   (Game | Real)
  • Mercedes-Benz 2007 S600   (Game | Real)
  • Audi 2008 R8   (Game | Real)

If you'd like a full list of cars seen in screenshots, the two trailers and mentioned in magazines, then we would recommend this post by a moderator at forzacentral.com which is comprehensive and quiet accurate.

Advertising and billboards

Unlike Grand Theft Auto IV, Midnight Club Los Angeles will have a large number of real-life companies advertised and placed throughout the city rather than having parodies of those real-life companies. So similar to the approach with having real world vehicles, the game will also have real world companies and franchises. We found:

  • DUB - Since Midnight Club 3, Rockstar and DUB Magazine have been working together and the DUB logo appears throughout the games on vehicles, parts and around town.
  • TIS Modular - Wheels, and more to the point, very customized wheels. This could mean vehicle customization that we saw in the previous game will return, perhaps to a large extent.
  • Pizza Hut - A popular Pizza restaurant.
  • Zaxby's - Chicken and fast food.
  • The Coffee Bean - Coffee, cookies and cake. A good 'ole Coffee Shop, just like Starbucks really.
  • Pioneer - Popular electronics company.
  • Quiksilver - Clothes and other apparel.
  • BVLGARI- Jewelery and watches.

Features

  • Reflection on paint jobs - We saw in the first trailer that there was reflections on helmets and rims, but now it appears the same principle is at work on the vehicles paint work. See here
  • Very realistic, the trees are even life-like - One thing games have always failed at is, oddly enough, trees. They are hard to model, however it would appear Rockstar have got them just right for MCLA, they fit into the feel of Los Angeles just right. See here
  • Characters much like GTA IV's - The characters in the game, that of which we have seen so far, do appear very life-like also and carry similar animations to that of GTA IV. In the past, due to Midnight Club being primarily about cars, not much detail was put into other objects such as characters and peds. It would appear to be different this time. See here
  • Protagonist - In the past games you we're just a racer, nothing more, nothing less. You never talked, never showed emotion and never really existed. In MCLA, you appear to play a realistic person, with emotions and a voice. If you watch through the trailer, you can see that your character has movements, similar to GTA IV again. See here and here
  • Detailed car interiors - The interiors of the cars is more detailed than we've ever seen, well in any racing game to be exact. A working speedometer, moving steering wheel, clock and other gadgets that are normal in our real world. The interior even has lights on buttons and controls during night driving, classy! See here, here and here
  • Realistic crashing similar to IV - As the game runs on the same engine as GTA IV (RAGE), most of what was seen in GTA IV can be seen in MCLA. One of those is crashing. It appears at the moment to be very similar to that of GTA IV. We wouldn't expect the ability to fly through the window and such, but it does seem to be along the same lines. See here

Music

  • The song in the second trailer was Royal Gregory by Holy Fuck ...interesting band name isn't it?

If you have not yet seen the trailer, best do so now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkcqA3N559Q

Or you could check out the first trailer again and our analysis on that:

Overall it would appear the game is a very ambitious project, and we look forward to seeing the final copy in October.

Rockstar has just updated the official Midnight Club LA website with the new second trailer that first premiered at Take-Two's E3 Press Conference. In addition to the trailer, the screenshots from the pre-views have now been posted on the site. According to the updated site, the official full website should be launched soon. Sadly, it seems the updated player Rockstar is using breaks viewing on Flash 10 beta. If you currently have Flash 10 installed, you may want to go back to version 9 or if you just want to watch the HD version of the trailer, just download it below.

Rockstar recently gave hands-on previews to several gaming sites such as Kotaku, IGN, GameSpot, and CVG. We have summed up Kotaku's preview below.

  1. Cars mentioned in the preview: Mazda RX8'60s,  Ford Mustang Boss 302, and a Aston-Martin V8 Vantage Roadster.
  2. You can spend money that you earn on real world name brand aftermarket parts that range from electronics to nitrous tanks. You can change your paintjob or even change your interior. Some other things that you can customize: headlights, doors, and steering wheel. There is most likely more you can customize that the article doesn't mention.
  3. You now have "Special Moves" that you can change via your garage. What are some of the special moves? Rockstar exlpains some:
    * Zone allows you to slow down time in order to take sharp turns or weave in-and-out of traffic like a champ!
    * Agro will give your car added strength and the ability to damage opponents faster, or sometimes knock them completely out of the race.
    * Roar sends a shockwave that clears your path by pushing cars off to the side of the road.
    * EMP is an electromagnetic pulse that shuts down the engines of the cars around you, bringing them to a complete stop.
  4. There are lots of recognizable landmarks. Sunset Strip, Beverly Hills, The Comedy Store, the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, and the Santa Monica Pier chockablock to name a few. Billboards also feature real-life products such as iPods and T-Mobile Sidekicks.
  5. You can start a race with someone by flashing your headlights.

In addition to hands-on previews, Rockstar released ten new screenshots of Midnight Club LA.

Take-Two has just announced that Midnight Club: Los Angeles will be pushed back again. On April 21st, Take-Two had announced that Midnight Club LA would be pushed back from it's early 2008 release date to September 9th.  However, it seems Rockstar has changed it's mind again by pushing the date back even further to a October 9th release date for the US and October 10th for Europe. The reasoning behind this? Take-Two won't say. Hopefully, Rockstar won't decide to push back the release date for a third time.

RAGE is, quiet literally, the backbone to everything you will see in Grand Theft Auto IV and upcoming Midnight Club: Los Angeles. It's creating realistic and complete worlds that is making everyone just a little excited. So how exactly does it all work, and whats the advantage of it? Well 1UP has published a nice article today answering both those questions, and more!

We will leave you too read the article on 1UP, since it really can't be summarized. However, they also included 9 new screenshots showing just how powerful this technical masterpiece is:

Rockstar has just announced a PlayStation Portable version of Midnight Club: Los Angeles, titled Midnight Club: Los Angeles Remix, along with the release date for both remix and the console counterpart. What's really shocking is that Rockstar Leeds, the portable studio of Rockstar, is not making the PSP version of the game. Instead, Rockstar London, developer of Manhunt 2, will be developing the remix version. It's unknown at the time what will be cut (if anything) from the portable version of MC:LA. Here is the press release. We have put the important text in bold.

New York, NY – April 21, 2008 – Rockstar Games is proud to announce the fourth installment of its critically-acclaimed and genre-defining Midnight Club franchise, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, is set for release on September 9th in North America and September 12th in Europe. Developed by series creator Rockstar San Diego, Midnight Club: Los Angeles will give gamers the unprecedented freedom to race through a hyper-realistic LA.

"From the beginning, Midnight Club has been about street racing in a open-world," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "With our team at Rockstar San Diego we have developed a game that we feel once again pushes the boundaries and expectations of what a racing game can be."

Whether driving by the beach or beating the competition by cutting through a parking garage at 200 mph, Midnight Club: Los Angeles provides a seamless, breathtaking environment for everyone who loves to compete. With no load times, no tracks, and no rules, the game allows players to race who they want, when they want, and where they want in an unbelievable recreation of Los Angeles.

"People are going to be blown away when they see how true-to-life Los Angeles looks in this game," said Jay Panek, Midnight Club Producer Rockstar San Diego. "We've added some great twists and turns that let players experience the authentic vibe and feel of the city at blistering speeds that you simply couldn't get away with in real life."

A racing game is nothing without the great cars and Midnight Club: Los Angeles allows extensive customization of vehicles for both performance and appearance. Players can now fully personalize their officially licensed imports, tuners, classic muscle cars and motorcycles both inside and out with a dizzying array of licensed rims, spoilers, interior gauges, tires and more.

Also scheduled for release on September 9th, Midnight Club: LA Remix for the PSP® system will provide another incredible portable racing experience. Developed by Rockstar London, the game will take full advantage of the hardware to deliver the unrivaled sense of speed and style that the best-selling Midnight Club series is known for.
